MLK Day of Service PDF Print

2011_Greenway_Group_1Our most recent What Does It Matter Event focused on the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  After preaching, teaching and singing about King on Sunday morning we spent Monday participating in a "Day of Service" that honors the legacy of MLK through community engagement.

Americans are challenged not just to take the day off from work, but to use the day to reengage with the community and make things a little better.  It can be any kind of service or outreach.

"Why Does It Matter?" Series

DSCN2011We held our "Why Advent Matters" event last Sunday night (Dec. 5th at 7pm).  About 40 people showed up to light candles in memory of loved ones no longer with us, to decorate the sanctuary with green swags and sing songs around the piano (Advent hymns sung to Christmas tunes).

We also listened to Rena Cornell read "Angels & All Children" and Sue Viebrock sing ancient Latin chants.

We finished with pies, Christmas cookies and other good Lutheran stuff.  It turns out Advent is a rich and active season with lots of traditions to celebrate.  I was thinking that next year we might gather earlier in the day and make Lefsa and Krumkake, but I am drawing the line on Lutefisk!
