At Wooden Cross, God is Green !!
Here at Wooden Cross Lutheran Church we want to do our part in caring for all of God’s creation. “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. The world and all that dwell in it!” proclaims Psalm 24:1. God owns the earth…it is only on loan to us. We are to be its caretakers or stewards according to the Bible.
In support of this mission, we have formed the “Green Team”, open to all in our congregation. Our vision is to make our church more eco-friendly and to promote the communication of great conservation ideas and actions amongst our members. Below are examples of our progress to date:
- Changing from incandescent to fluorescent light bulbs throughout the church
- Separation receptacles for recycles in the narthex, fellowship hall, and kitchen
- Recycle bins for paper, glass, plastic bottles, tin and aluminum cans
- Compost bin (lined with biodegradable bags) for food waste and yard waste (which eventually becomes rich compost to be used as soil; picked up weekly by Cedar Grove Composting)
- Using “the Green Office” online store for all future office product needs, including paper, envelopes, ink cartridges, compostable paper cups, etc.
- Purchasing and using green cleaning products for church kitchen
- Using only organic lawn and plant products on church grounds (no toxic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers)
- Replacing paper cups, plates, and bowls with washable Corelle cups, plates, and bowls; to be used during coffee hour
- Eliminating the use of plastic utensils and using regular flatware during church events
- Purchasing and using Eco-friendly palms during Palm Sunday
- Purchasing Fair Trade, shade grown coffee for Sunday coffee hour
- Planting a Western Red Cedar on Earth Day to commemorate our initial greening year
- Monthly Green Team challenge…tip-of-the-month newsletter columns
- Pastor Woody volunteering to take shorter showers

We’ll continue to grow our list as Wooden Cross gets greener! |
